Richard C. Janing

A Funeral Service for Richard will be held on Wednesday, October 11, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Geneva, Nebraska with Pastor Doug Griger presiding. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 10, 2023 from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with family present from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva, Nebraska. Graveside Services with Military Honors will be held following the funeral service at the Geneva Public Cemetery in Geneva, Nebraska. Memorials are to be directed to the Geneva United Methodist Church. Richard Carl Janing was born to Carl A. Janing and Esther E. Bordner Janing on January 14, 1938 at Geneva, Nebraska, and passed away October 6, 2023 at Heritage Crossings in Geneva, Nebraska at the age of 85. He was one of 2 children in the family. Richard was baptized in the Geneva United Methodist Church. He attended country school Districts 46 and 13 through 8th grade, and graduated from Geneva High School in 1955. He was a member of the FFA chapter, and received the State Degree. He was a member of the Nebraska National Guard. He did basic training at Fort Leonardwood. He was activated and stationed in Fort Collins, Colorado. Richard married Darlene Lott on April 3, 1965. To this union 3, children were born: Elizabeth, Michael, and John. Richard began farming as a teenager, farming all his life until “retirement”. After moving to town, he went to the farm every day as he was able. When son Michael returned from college, he expanded the hog operation. Son John also returned to the farm. The Janing Family received the Nebraska Pioneer Farm Family Award. Richard was a 75-year member of the Geneva United Methodist Church. At the church, he served on many committees through the years including the Trustees during the building of the new church. He and Darlene joined the Grange in 1970. They recently received the Nebraska State Grange Distinguished Service Award. Richard was currently serving on the State Executive Committee. He was a lifelong blood donor, giving 12 gallons, a 4-H leader for 20 years, and a DeKalb salesman. He served as the Fillmore County Farm Bureau President, and was a member of the Odd Fellows. Richard enjoyed hunting and fishing, traveling with friends, attending grandkids’ events, and watching the great granddaughters play. Over the years, he enjoyed buying cattle from a Colorado ranch, and fishing while he was there. Richard was preceded in death by parents Carl and Esther, and brothers-in-law Duane Lott and Robert Lauenstein. He is survived by wife Darlene, daughter Elizabeth (Mark) Nieveen, sons Michael Janing, and John (Susan) Janing, grandchildren Matthew (Candace) Nieveen, Brian Nieveen, Briana Janing, Isaac, Anna, and Ellie Janing, great granddaughters Nora and Delilah Nieveen, sister Caroline Lauenstein, nephew Jim (Jamie) Lott, and niece Linda Mitchell.
