Gracie Ann Mussman

A Funeral Service Gracie was held Saturday, July 11, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Ohiowa, Nebraska. PMA Jim Germer & PMA Nancy Hinrichs presided over the Funeral Service. Nancy Cradduck was the organist and accompanied the congregation in the singing of "Praise To The Lord, The Almighty," "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God," "O God, Our Help In Ages Past," "and "All Creatures Of Our God & King." Pallbearers included Nathan George, Ryan George, Andrew George, Garrett Gibson, Evan Skiles, Tyler Carlson, and Brad Diekhoff. A Graveside Service was held in the Ohiowa Public Cemetery following the Funeral Service. Memorials are suggested to the St. John's Lutheran Church. Gracie Ann Mussman went home to be with the Lord on June 30, 2026, after a brief illness. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Born on September 12, 1928, in Diller, Nebraska, Gracie was the daughter of Rev. Herman Juergen and Bertha (Schmale) Diekhoff. Her father's ministry led the family to congregations in Diller, Gothenburg, Otoe, and Ohiowa, Nebraska. When they moved from the steep hills of Otoe to the flat plains of Ohiowa, the Diekhoff children wondered where they would ever go sledding! In her teenage years, Gracie became especially close friends with Phyllis Peterson and Jean Schropfer, spending many fun hours together. Gracie graduated from Ohiowa High School in 1946. She worked at JCPenney in Geneva, apprenticed as a beautician at Town & Country Salon, and later worked as a telephone operator. She recalled helping connect Hebron officials with the Nebraska governor following the devastating Mother's Day Tornado of 1953. Gracie’s roommate Velma spoke of the handsome local bachelor and farmer Cyrus Mussman. Velma was pleased when Cy called their apartment, but disappointed when he asked to speak with Gracie. Cy and Gracie were married by her father on December 27, 1953 at St. John’s Lutheran Church. They farmed near Ohiowa for several years. Their son Alan Ray was born in 1954 and daughter Brenda Kay in 1958. In 1963 they built a new home on their farm in Thayer County. Gracie was an active life-long member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. She often served as church organist, vocalist, and confirmation teacher. She especially enjoyed her involvement and leadership with Lutheran Church Women. Gracie was a devoted farm wife, mother, and homemaker, often taking many hot meals out to Cy as he worked in the fields. She encouraged her kids to work hard in school and in their activities. She enjoyed time with her six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Gracie made custom-decorated themed birthday cakes for each of her grandchildren featuring beautiful handmade frosting roses that delighted them. Gracie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Cy and son Alan, and her four brothers and sisters-in-law. She is survived by her daughter, Brenda (Steve) George; daughter-in-law Kaye Mussman; grandchildren Dena (Evan) Skiles, Leah (Tyler) Carlson, Nathan George, Ryan (Tamara) George, Andrew George, and Elizabeth (Garrett Gibson) George; great-granddaughters McKinley and Sophie Skiles, Ivy Carlson, and Eva George, and extended family and friends. Gracie will be remembered for her infectious laugh, self-deprecating humor, crescent rolls, and service to her community and family.
