Bonnie B Novak Kness was born March 4, 1929 to Joseph Novak and Anna (Hamouz) Novak near Milligan, Nebraska. She lived on a farm between Milligan and Geneva and spoke only Czech until she started school. In 1937, her family moved to a farm north of Fairmont, Nebraska where she attended District 4 and graduated from Fairmont Public School in 1946. She took care of the home and her sister when her parents were in the fields. She attended UNL and then worked at the Lancaster County Courthouse, in Lincoln, Nebraska. She and her Aunt Betty Novak enjoyed going to the famous Burress dances, where she met the love of her life, Ken Kness, who she married in 1949. To this union 2 children were born, Gary and Karen. They lived on a farm near Fairmont and eventually moved to town. She was one very busy lady, milking cows, raising chickens (turning them into great fried dinners), helping the elderly stay in their homes, and if you were lucky you may have enjoyed her baked items, especially kolache and pies. After a long day at her job, you usually could find her relaxing in one of her many flower gardens. Bonnie lived up to her name, which means beautiful, as she was a friend you could count on if you needed help, and she really enjoyed her circle of “going out to eat” ladies. When they moved to town Bonnie took on various jobs, bookkeeper at the Co-op, Fairmont utilities, and then at Fairview Manor for around thirty years. She was presented a statewide award for her dedication for her work at Fairview Manor. Bonnie was a member of the Methodist church, helped teach Sunday school classes, sang in the choir and provided food whenever needed. She really enjoyed going to Gary and Karen’s musical programs and was very proud of their talents and accomplishments in their careers. Bonnie and special friend, Diane Swerczek, spent many fun times visiting into the wee hours, while their husbands played in a dance band. Trips to Arizona for the winter and just general travels around the country with friends were high priority; she especially loved seeing the fall colors in the eastern states. Of course, Taco, the Yorkie was always a passenger on these trips. She is preceded in death by parents, Joe and Anna Novak; husband Ken Kness, son Gary Kness, and sister MariAnn Novak. She leaves to mourn her daughter, Karen Kness of Kalamazoo, Michigan, daughter-in-law, Deb Kness Novak of Geneva, Nebraska, sister, Rosalie Kleinschmidt of Shickley, Nebraska, sister-in-law, Germaine Kness of Arizona and many nieces, nephews and friends.
