    Doug K. Hughes

    January 27, 1950 - May 27, 2011

Of Geneva, passed away at Fillmore County Hospital In Geneva on Friday, May 27, 2011. Age 61 Years. Funeral services will be conducted from the United Methodist Church in Geneva at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 31, 2011. Public Visitation was Monday, from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva. Interment was in the Geneva Public Cemetery. Memorials are directed to the United Methodist Church, Geneva Rescue Unit or Donor’s Choice. Douglas Kent Hughes was born to Darrel Hughes and Jean (Lovegrove) Hughes on January 27, 1950, at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva, Nebraska. He passed away on May 27, 2011, near Ohiowa, Nebraska, at the age of 61 years, 4 months, and 4 days. Doug grew up in Geneva and was the oldest of three children. He was baptized at the United Methodist Church. Doug attended grade school at District #81 in Fillmore County and graduated from Geneva High School in 1968. After he attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, he farmed with his dad and worked for Conklin. Doug was united in marriage to Mary Ann Murphy on February 18, 1978, at the bride’s parents’ home in Thomasville, Georgia. To them one child, Prescott, was born. They lived in Thomasville and owned and operated a needlework and framing shop. Doug was creative, a skilled handyman, and a talented craftsman. He could do almost anything—paint a picture or build a house, but he definitely could not dance. Doug moved back to Geneva in June 2000. He helped Jason Tatro farm and move pivots. Doug also worked for several other local farmers during planting and harvest seasons. Doug enjoyed corvettes, water skiing, snow skiing, riding snow mobiles, and skydiving. He was an avid Nebraska football fan and an excellent cook. He had a sense of humor and was easygoing. Doug was a man with a big heart, a man with many friends, and he had a one-of-a-kind infectious giggle. He will be missed by his friends and family. His mother, Jean, aunts Delores (Lovegrove) Dand and Carol (Hughes) Motis, an uncle, Robert Hughes, and a cousin, Michael Fowler, preceded Doug in death. He is survived by his son, Prescott, of Charleston, South Carolina; father, Darrel Hughes and wife, Evelyn, of Geneva, Nebraska; a brother, Rick Hughes and wife, Kay, of Geneva; a sister, Cheryl Hedden and husband, Mitch, of Fairmont; nieces and nephews Sarah Bishoff and husband Jeremy; Melissa Hughes; Nathan Hughes; Ryan Hedden and wife, Ashley; Adam Hedden; Tanner Hedden; two great-nieces, Chloe and Allie Bishoff; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
