Doyle Warner “Dusty” Mills was born to Warner D. Mills and Inez (Dye) Mills on April 25, 1918 at Annapolis, Ohio and passed away September 30, 2013 in York, Nebraska. The family moved to a farm just one mile from Annapolis where they lived until both of his parents passed away after 68 years of marriage. Doyle attended a one room country school one mile from the farm and graduated from Hopedale High School as Valedictorian in the class of 1934 at the age of fifteen. He signed a contract with the St. Louis Cardinals at the age of sixteen and played in their minor league system until he was drafted into the Army in 1941. He was in the Army for 21 years serving in the European Theatre until the end of the war. Then he served in Japan and Alaska until his retirement in 1962 achieving the rank of Major. In June of 1942 he married Jeanne Wilson who traveled with him to Japan and Alaska. Jeanne passed away March 8, 1982. After his retirement from the Army he received a Bachelor Degree at the University of Omaha in 1963 and a Masters Degree from the University of Omaha in Educational Administration. He served as a school administer until his retirement as Superintendent of Schools in Waverly, Nebraska. He also served as Superintendent at the Shickley and Hildreth High Schools. He married Aleene Schaffer in March of 1998. Dusty was preceded in death by his parent and two older brothers Walter and Eugene. He is survived by his wife Aleene of Geneva, a special “son” Chris Sterns of Sutton, and many nieces and nephews in Ohio. Funeral services were conducted from the Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva, Nebraska on Thursday, October 3, 2013 with Pastor Dean Carlisle officiating. Karl Brinkman played his guitar and sang On Eagles Wings and Amazing Grace. Additional services are going to be held on Monday, October 7, 2013 at the Annapolis Presbyterian Church in Annapolis, Ohio. Interment will be in the Union Port Cemetery in Union Port, Ohio. Memorials are directed to the Wounded Warriors or the Geneva Volunteer Fire and Rescue.
