Janelle Sue Houck was born in York, Nebraska on August 15, 1954 to Patricia (Ohnesorge) and Earl Houck, and she passed away October 4, 2020 in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 66 years, 1 month, and 20 days. Janelle was a life-long member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Bruning. She attended Strang School through 8th grade and graduated from Bruning High School. Janelle married Douglas Bruning in 1974, and to them two daughters were born. She graduated from Bryan School of Nursing in 1975 and worked at family practice clinics in Geneva and Hebron for most of her nursing career. Janelle took a break from nursing in the late 1990s to run a catering business, Kate & Nellie Sue’s, with her friend, Kathleen Philippi. They were known for comfort food and a wide variety of cookies and sweet treats. She ended her career caring for patients at Blue Valley Lutheran Nursing Home. After her nursing career, she devoted time to helping Doug farm at harvest time, even driving the combine. Janelle served on many boards and was very involved in her community. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and lent her sewing talents to Quilts of Valor. She took great pride in presenting quilts to veterans who had served their country. Janelle also taught piano lessons for many years and treasured her time in 4-H as a member, leader and judge. Janelle loved sports, especially watching Husker football, volleyball and baseball. She and Doug had adventures traveling to away football games with friends and family. She instilled resilience in her daughters, telling them to “brush your teeth and go to school, you’ll be fine.” Michelle and Maggie joked with her over the years that they knew they had to really be sick to get out of school. She was preceded in death by her father, Earl, and brother, Scott Houck. Survived by husband, Doug, daughters Michelle (Jason) Paulk and Maggie (Justin) Jiskra, granddaughters Emma Jiskra, Catie Paulk, Skylar Paulk and Ruby Jiskra, mother Pat (Houck Hobbs) Headrick (aka Pat Triple-H) and husband Allan, sister and brother-in-law Sondra and Delwin Myers, sister-in-law Jody Houck, and nieces and nephew Alicia Chavez, Andrea Seggerman, Ross Houck and Taylor Lauenstein.
