A Funeral Service for Laurine was held on Monday, June 15, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. at the Salem Mennonite Church in rural Shickley, Nebraska with Pastor Mike Row presiding. Pianist, Deb Jaberg, accompanied the Chorister, Don Kempf, and the congregation as they sang, “When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder”, “The Church Is One Foundation”, “How Great Thou Art” and “Faith Of Our Father”. Casket Bearers included Derek Schweitzer, Kyle Kassebaum, Drew Rodine, Bret Schweitzer, Jerome Masek and Morgan Masek. Honorary Casket Bearers were Giselle Bray, Carisa Masek, Rachelle Schweitzer, Shauna Rodine, Jami Kassebaum, Sarah Schweitzer and Emily Schweitzer. Graveside Services were conducted following the funeral service at the Salem Cemetery in rural Shickley, Nebraska. Memorials were directed to the Salem Mennonite Church. Farmer & Son Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements. Laurine Gertrude (Lichti) Schweitzer of Hebron, NE was born to Daniel and Amelia (Schrock) Lichti on August 15, 1920 near Davenport, NE. She passed away on June 12, 2020 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Lincoln, NE at the age of 99 years, 9 months and 27 days. Laurine accepted Christ as her personal savior in her youth and was baptized and joined Salem Mennonite Church near Shickley. Laurine graduated from Bruning High School and attended Kearney State Teacher’s College. She taught school for 6 years in Thayer County. The last years were in the West Ward of Bruning Public School. On December 19, 1945 she married Boyd Schweitzer of Shickley. They made their home on a farm in Fillmore County. Their marriage was blessed with a son, Royce, a daughter, Trudy, 7 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. They lived in the Shickley vicinity until 1975 when they moved to Bruning for Boyd’s employment with the Village of Bruning. Laurine had a green thumb and canned enough garden produce for her entire family. She loved to cook, bake and decorate wedding cakes for family weddings. Laurine was also a talented seamstress who enjoyed sewing clothes for her children and grandchildren. She designed and made her own wedding gown, as well as gowns for other family members. A Mom, Grandma and Great Grandma with a great love for her family. Laurine could always find a positive in every situation, and she lived life with a happy, caring, contagious smile. She was a hard worker who put others before herself, and remained strong in her faith until the day God called her home. Laurine was preceded in death by her husband Boyd, her parents, 4 brothers: Chris, Louis, Albert, Reuben, and 1 sister Katie Reichert. 5 sister in-laws and 5 brother in-laws. Left to cherish her memory is her son Royce Schweitzer of Henderson, daughter Trudy (Schweitzer) Kassebaum and husband Rick of Hebron. Four granddaughters; Giselle (Schweitzer) Bray of San Diego, CA, Carisa (Schweitzer) Masek and husband Jerome of Ceresco, Rachelle Schweitzer of Henderson, Shauna (Kassebaum) Rodine and husband Drew of David City. Three grandsons; Derek Schweitzer and wife Sarah of Kearney, Bret Schweitzer and wife Emily of Lincoln, Kyle Kassebaum and wife Jami of Palmyra. 12 great-grandchildren; Veronica and Corinna Bray of San Diego, CA, Morgan and Josilyn Masek of Ceresco, Kade, Koen and Kenzi Kassebaum of Palmyra, Teagan and Gabriel Schweitzer of Kearney, Brinli and Bryden Rodine of David City and Zoey Schweitzer of Lincoln; beloved nieces and nephews.
