    Marti L. Alfs

    September 18, 1957 - May 8, 2022

Martha L. Alfs (Grone) was born to Hollis Lee Grone and Nelva Clarissa (Bartling) Grone on September 18, 1957 in Deshler, Nebraska. Marti joined her Heavenly Father after passing peacefully in her home on Mother’s Day, May 8th, 2022. She was a faithful woman who loved the Lord, her family, church, and community. Marti was the third of five children and spent her early years as a tomboy working hard to keep up with her siblings. She shared many fond memories of her time on the farm with her brother and sisters. After graduating from Davenport high school, Marti attended McPherson College for a couple of years with the intention of becoming a school teacher-this was fitting for her given the gift she had working with children. Marti was involved in her church from a very young age and was often in charge of Bible and Sunday school activities. She had an active adult lifestyle from running and biking to walking in her most recent years. She would often be up to do her five or more mile walk and back before the rest of the household was awake! Marti met the love of her life on a bike across Nebraska trip in July of 1985. The two were married January 10, 1987 and to them three girls were born. Throughout her daughter’s childhood, Marti “adopted” many other girls as her own and remained close with them into adulthood as well. Marti was well known for her volunteering for school activities including playing the piano for choir, chaperoning field trips, and making homemade Runzas and Rice Krispie treats for locker treats! Marti was also known for throwing her daughter’s birthday parties of legend-parties that are still reminisced about to this day. Marti was generous with her gifts and time. She played for many weddings, funerals, and church every week. There was no greater joy in her life than her grandkids. Her first grandson arrived in 2009 and “Granny Daycare” was born. Marti watched her grandchildren while her daughters worked and did so up until the very end. Marti was preceded in death by her parents. Marti is survived by her husband Tim of Shickley; daughters Abby Alfs of Shickley, Megan and Josh Erickson of Shickley, and Emily and Andrew Alfs-Votipka of Manhattan, Kansas; grandchildren Lakota Alfs-Tuberville and Piper Alfs-Stewart, and Ezamae, Callum, and Merrick Erickson; siblings Dianne and John Craig of Ocean, New Jersey, Holly and Warren Schoming of Davenport, Garry and Clarissa Grone of Davenport, and Gina Grone of Fairbury; and many beloved nieces and nephews. A private family Memorial Service was held for Marti at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, 2022 at the United Methodist Church in Shickley, Nebraska. Pastor Cesar Duran presided over the Memorial Service. Holly Schoming accompanied the congregation in the singing of “How Great Thou Art” and the recorded selections “Rock Of Ages” was also played during the Memorial Service. Honorary Pallbearers included Lakota Alfs-Tuberville, Piper Alfs-Stewart, Ezamae Erickson, Callum Erickson, and Merrick Erickson. Following the Memorial Service there was a private family Committal of Ashes in the Shickley Cemetery. A public lunch and Celebration of Life was held at the Shickley Community Center following the Memorial Service and Graveside Service. Farmer & Son Funeral Home was in care of the arrangements and online condolences can be left at www.farmerandsonfuneralhome.com Memorials are suggested to the Shickley United Methodist Church.
