Nadine Rose Weber Mussman was born to John Henry Weber and Rose Marie Meyer Weber on February 25, 1926 on a farm near Alexandria, Nebraska. Nadine passed away September 9, 2021, in Fremont, Nebraska, surrounded by her children. Nadine arrived in this world as the third of three daughters. As children, the three sisters were extremely close, and remained so for the rest of their lives. Family, faith and hard work were values they shared, working together on the family farm, gardening, tending chickens, and gathering eggs. They attended Grace Lutheran Church, Ohiowa, Nebraska, where Nadine was baptized and confirmed. Nadine attended public school in Ohiowa, and worked at the Geneva drugstore as a fountain girl. After graduating from Ohiowa High School in May of 1944, Nadine very much enjoyed her work as a telephone operator for The Lincoln Telephone Company at the Fairmont Air Base during World War II. While overseas, Kenneth had his brother purchase an engagement ring and propose to Nadine on his behalf. The pair were married at St. John’s Lutheran on October 20, 1946. They farmed and raised cattle and hogs a mile and a half east of Ohiowa for 14 years until Kenneth was named Ohiowa Postmaster on July 4, 1960 and they moved to town. Over a span of 13 years their union was blessed with five children. In 1966, Nadine went to work at Fillmore County Hospital. She worked 10 years on the floor followed by 15 years in Physical Therapy, where she encouraged people to work hard at healing, re-learning to walk, and regaining physical strength. She retired in 1991. Nadine cultivated hobbies that allowed her to give to others. An avid gardener, she raised and shared vegetables, teaching her children to value the rewards of work. Her yard was full of beautiful flowers, and she and Kenneth also planted and tended flowers in the city park for many years. Her patients at the hospital were often recipients of her flowers. In addition, Nadine was an avid quilter. For the family, Nadine created a baby quilt and a Christmas stocking which she brought to the hospital the day each child was born. When graduation day came, each grandchild received a handmade quilt for their college dorm, and each wedding brought another quilt and embroidered pillowcases and dish towels. These loving gifts will be passed down through generations. Nadine was active in her church, serving meals and helping organize events. She took great pleasure in sharing her faith with children and youth, teaching Sunday School for many years. She was active in many community activities. Everyone was welcome in Nadine and Kenneth’s home. Aunts and uncles and sisters and brothers dropped in whenever they were in town. When someone brought home a new girlfriend, boyfriend, or pet, all were welcomed with open arms. The family enjoyed playing pitch, tournament style, and hunting and cleaning game for the annual New Year’s Day feast featuring that year’s bounty, shot, cooked and served by the men. Nadine was the hub of the family. For more than 20 years, she wrote a nightly email to the families, telling the events of the day and keeping everyone connected. When there was news to be announced, she always had the honor of being the first to share the excitement of an engagement or the birth of a new baby. Her grandchildren called her frequently, sharing their news or thanking her for teaching them to try new things, stay positive, work hard, do their best, and trust in God. To be near their family, Kenneth and Nadine moved to Fremont, Nebraska in 2008, attending First Lutheran Church and enjoying many activities with children and grandchildren. After Kenneth’s passing in 2018, Nadine moved to an apartment at Nye Square and enjoyed the staff, her new friends, and frequent visits from family. Nadine was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Dorlaine Stanley and Mildred Rut. She is celebrated and survived by her children Kathren (Dave) Miller of Lincoln, Johnell (Dan) Pennington of Bennington, Gaylord (Vali) of Fremont, Burnell (Bev) of Bellevue, and David (Laura) of Omaha, as well as 14 grandchildren, Michael (Christina), Grant (Karin), Matthew (Antoinette), Amy (Matthew), Lindsay (Derik), Sarah (Michael), Gena (Aaron), Brianna (Kurt), Ian, Brayden, Ruby, Grace, Brooklyn, and Noah. They have also been blessed with 18 great-grandchildren, Ava, Eli, Kenneth, Rex, Nora, Alana, Luke, Chase, Ashton, Connor, Benjamin, Isabel, Camila, Caleb, Jacob, Alena, Hannah and Naomi.
