Raymond Velasquez, 72, of Fairmont NE, passed away at his home Saturday November 30, 2013,surrounded by his family. Ray was born on February 15, 1941 in Edinburg Texas and was the oldest of 20 brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife Terry Soliz Velasquez, whom he was introduced to by his brother Herman, The couple married July 1, 1964. Together they had 6 children. He enlisted in the Army in March 20, 1963 to March 19,1968 where he obtained his GED. He served in Vietnam 1965-1966 with the First Division (The Big Red 1), stationed in Fort Riley Kansas. Ray is a member of The American Legion Post LT Forbes Post 21 Fairmont, NE & The VFW Samuel J Marsh Post 7102 Geneva, NE. Ray loved to be on the open road. He made his living as a truck driver, better known as “Speedy” over the CB. He drove for 40 + years. 30 of those years Ray and Terry drove together as a team. Being a truck driver was not only his job, he had the added benefit of getting loads to certain states, as this meant he could see his extended family. He loved every opportunity he got to see his Brothers and Sisters. He was especially fond of all his nieces and nephews. Ray continued to drive a truck until 2012, and only stopped driving for health reasons. Ray loved everything outdoors; you would often find him on his deck enjoying the sun. He especially enjoyed outdoor activities with his grandsons, fishing or camping if the time was available. He very much enjoyed firing up the grill for an impromptu family gathering. He would bring all his kids together then sit back on the deck, usually with a cold beer in his hand, enjoying all the chaos con su familia. Ray enjoyed socializing with his “buddies” (old and new) at the Legion in Fairmont. He particularly enjoyed checking his “voice mails” with his good friend and neighbor Stan at the BVI in McCool. Speedy will be missed dearly by all. Memorials are directed to the family in lieu of flowers.
