Robert M. "Bob" Hendrickson

Robert (Bob) Maurice Hendrickson, a life-long Fillmore County farmer, was born to Maurice E. and Joan E. (Stewart) Hendrickson on October 21, 1957 in Hebron, Nebraska. He was the second of four children in the family. Baptized at Stockholm Lutheran Church at rural Shickley, he was confirmed in the same church and remained an active member until the church closed in 2005. Bob graduated from Shickley Public Schools in 1976, and was looking forward to celebrating his class’s 50-year reunion in July. He then attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, earning his BS in Animal Science in 1981. In 1979-80 he spent eight months in New Zealand as a part of a young farmer exchange through the IFYE program. He also hitchhiked and backpacked in Australia for two weeks during that time, which whetted his appetite for more travel. He was instrumental in hosting numerous agricultural interns from Europe and Latin America on the family farm in the 1980s and 1990s. Bob returned to the farm after college, and also worked as an agronomy technician at the University of Nebraska’s South Central Research Station in Clay County. Tales from his time there and the people he worked with provided a wealth of background and experiences that he later took with him into his own agricultural enterprises. Bob was always intensely curious and this characteristic led to his involvement in diverse activities such as the Farmer and Ranchers College, various workshops, and testifying before the Nebraska Legislature. He continued to stay current in agricultural and world issues and this interest in learning more about the world led him to be a part of the Nebraska LEAD Program in 1998 – 2000. As a LEAD Fellow, his class journeyed to China and other areas of Asia. Bob also traveled to Morocco to visit his brother John during John’s Peace Corp assignment there. He extended that trip to Germany and Scotland as well to visit former IFYE and FFA Work Experience Abroad alumni that his family had hosted over the years. He enjoyed exploring areas of the United States, whether he was helping family members, hauling a tiny house over the northern Rockies, or attending a wedding in another state. Bob always enjoyed children and was told he held the title of “Favorite Uncle” on many occasions. As his nieces and nephews grew, he enjoyed attending their milestones and was especially fond of his great-nieces and great-nephews. All of the youngsters loved him and his willingness to play “horsey,” jump with them on a trampoline, or hold them upside down so they could “walk” on the ceiling. He was an active member of the Shickley community, especially through the local Sons of American Legion chapter. Bob passed away on June 24th, 2026 at Bryan West following a short illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, his grandparents, and a brother-in-law, Dave Biba. He is survived by his sisters Susan Biba (Frank Heinisch) of Geneva, NE, Mary Hendrickson (John Emery) of Columbia Missouri; and a brother, John Hendrickson (Chris) of Mandan, North Dakota. He is also survived by three nieces and two nephews, and five great-nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service for Bob was held on Thursday, July 2, 2026 at 10:30 a.m. at Stockholm Lutheran Church, rural Shickley, Nebraska. Pastor Jonathan Jensen presided over the Funeral Service. Stanley Johnson was the organist and he accompanied the congregation in the singing of “Borning Cry” and “Children Of The Heavenly Father.” Pallbearers included Brandon Biba, Jonah Hendrickson, John Emery, Catherin Biba, Elizabeth Scott, Annika Hendrickson, and Bill Sharp, Jr. A Graveside Service was held in the Swedish Cemetery, rural Shickley, Nebraska.
